Our decking design and installation process

1. Free consultation and quote. A member of the team will meet you in your garden to discuss decking options for your space. We will guide you through material choices and discuss the benefits of each, height considerations against the house and into the garden, safety considerations such as handrails, steps or safety rails and design options in regards to shape and use of space.

If you are happy to go ahead we require a deposit to cover material costs and then we will book in a date for us to come and build your decking!

Timber Decking

2. Installation. The installation process starts with the framing. We use treated timber joists to ensure strength and longevity for your project. There are options to have this protected further with products like deck tape if this is relevant to your project and budget. We will ensure the decking height meets the doors and allows for drainage away from the house (not as much of an issue with decking as each board has a gap unlike a patio).

Once the frame is completed it’s time to clad it with your board of choice. All composite decking is installed in line with manufacturers guidelines and timber decking is installed to allow for the minimal swell and movement you experience with natural timber cladding.

3. Quality Checks. Our team members pride themselves on quality of work and precision and installing the frame is the key element of any decking project.

Very good correspondence, polite team. Final project was slightly different to the original quote but partly based on us wanting bigger dimensions than planned. The team worked efficiently to resolve this however. Very good timekeeping, the team were prompt and worked through some harsh conditions to get the project done. Looks great and we are looking forward to spending many summers enjoying our new seating area.

Garden Decking FAQs

  • It can be laid over sloping or uneven areas of your garden. It is often a quicker process than laying a patio and can be cut into a variety of shapes to fit your space.

  • Composite decking is the easiest to maintain without requiring treatment like wood products, composite is easily cleaned and designed to be durable and long lasting.

  • Composite decking is an excellent choice for coastal areas due to its durability and resistance to the elements commonly found in these environments.

    • Resistance to salt and moisture - composite decking is highly resistant to moisture, salt and humidity, all of which are prevalent in coastal areas. It won't rot, swell or warp like timber.

    • Low maintenance - unlike wood composite decking doesn’t require regular sealing, staining or painting. It’s easy to clean with soap and water making it ideal for busy coastal environments where upkeep can be challenging,

    • Resistant to UV rays - composite decking is designed to resist the fading and discolouration caused by UV rays. While some discolouration will occur over time, especially with intense sunlight, it is generally much less than with wood.

    • Slip resistance - Composite deckings are manufactured to be textured and Millboard has a special coating to resist moss and help create a safer, slip-resistant surface. This makes composite a safer option for wet environments which is desirable in coastal areas.

It is essential to choose a high quality composite decking, our recommendations of Millboard of DesignBoard are based on years of experience and hundreds of installations. cription

  • You can expect a traditional timber decking to last 10-15 years with proper maintenance. A hardwood decking can last up to 20 years. Composite can last 30 years with minimal upkeep and Millboard can last 35 to 40 years.

  • Composite decking has a higher upfront cost but often proves more cost effective over time due to its low maintenance and long lifespan. It doesn’t require sealing or repairs like wood, saving both time and money in the long run.

  • Yes, decking can be installed over existing concrete patios, as long as the concrete is in good condition.

    • Small deck (up to 20m2) 1-4 days

    • Medium deck (20-50m2) 3-6 days

    • Large deck (50m+) 5-7 days or more

These timelines vary depending on the material, design complexity, site preparation, weather and site accessibility.

  • To prevent slips, keep the deck clean and free of mould, mildew and debris. Using anti-slip coatings, mats or composite boards will also improve traction, especially in wet conditions.

  • For wood decks, use a deck cleaner and scrub with a brush. For composite mild soap and a soft brush or pressure washer. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the surface.
